Many women face issues of the vaginal contour due to large or irregular inner lips (labia minora).

Some of them are born with this condition, while others develop this because of age or after childbirth. In many cases, the enlarged labia causes both functional and aesthetic disturbances. This issue can be fixed with a cosmetic procedure called a labiaplasty in Singapore.

What is a labiaplasty?

Labiaplasty (also known as aesthetic vaginal surgery, vaginal rejuvenation or female genital rejuvenation)

Labiaplasty is a cosmetic plastic surgery procedure in Singapore that specifically designed to reduce a women’s inner lips (labia minora) length and/or improve its contour and symmetry.

About labiaplasty in Singapore

The procedure can also relieve discomfort associated with tugging and twisting of enlarged labia.

The procedure can also relieve discomfort associated with tugging and twisting of enlarged labia.

Women with enlarged labia on one or both sides can experience issues such as:

  • Discomfort while jogging, cycling, horseback riding
  • Discomfort wearing tight-fitting clothes or bathing suits
  • Pain during intercourse
  • Chronic labial irritation

In these situations, normal activities become painful or embarrassing. It can prevent women from participating or fully enjoying various activities and result in a major impact to their self-confidence.

In some cases, even if women have no discomfort, they might feel insecure due to the aesthetics of their labia. Labial asymmetry, protuberance, or excessive labial show can make them feel overly self-conscious in their relationships.

How does labiaplasty work?

Labiaplasties can be performed for both cosmetic or medical reasons, this is a personal choice and the type of labiaplasty chosen will depend on your needs and wants.

Using one of the methods mentioned below, a labiaplasty can correct both the inner labia (labia minora) and the outer labia (labia majora).

Non-surgical labiaplasty

A type of filler known as hyaluronic acid, is injected into the labia to plump it up, making it appear fuller and more voluminous. This process is temporary, hence, must be repeated once a year.

Surgical labiaplasty

There are two types of surgical labiaplasty, these are:

  • Fat grafting: fats from other parts of your body are taken and injected into your labia, making it appear fuller and voluminous.
  • Excision of excess labia tissue: suitable for individuals who want to reduce the size of their labia. The excess labia tissue is removed, and the labia is reconstructed into the desired size and shape.

Benefits of labiaplasty

  • Youthful vaginal contour
  • Improved labia symmetry
  • Significant reduction in friction related labial irritation
  • Balanced, harmonious, and natural looking results
  • Comfort in wearing tight fitting clothes such as yoga pants, leggings, bikini, etc.
  • Comfort doing activities like cycling or horseback riding
  • Improved quality of life and self-confidence

What should I expect before labiaplasty procedure in Singapore?

During your first consultation, you and your surgeon will discuss your preferred size, position, type of procedure, and desired results. Additionally, you will discuss on the following things:

Medical history

It is important to give honest answers with regards to your medical history. This allows your surgeon to make accurate and safe decisions with regards to the procedure. Inform your surgeon about any medications, surgeries, or allergies you have/had. You must also inform your surgeon if you have diabetes, circulatory problems, thyroid problems, and other health issues if any.

Physical examination
  • Your surgeon will conduct a physical examination of your labia and help to identify any problem areas that can be treated with a labiaplasty.
  • After this, you and your surgeon will discuss the options available and the possible results with each option. Once the treatment plan has been decided for you, your procedure will be booked. Before the procedure, you must:
  • Stop smoking: smoking reduces blood flow to the skin and hinders the healing process. It also increases your risk of tissue damage.
  • Stop some medications: medications such as aspirins and anti-inflammatory drugs are blood thinners which may increase bleeding during and after the procedure.

What should I expect during the procedure?

Labiaplasties are usually conducted as a day-surgery, meaning you will not be required to stay overnight at the hospital if all goes well.

Non-surgical labiaplasty
  • Hyaluronic fillers are injected into your labia to plump them up to your desired size.

Fat grafting labiaplasty
  • General anaesthesia is administered.
  • Liposuction is used to harvest fats from your tummy or thighs.
  • The fats are run through a centrifuge machine to separate impurities which are then removed.
  • The purified fats are then injected into your labia giving them a plump and rejuvenated appearance.

Excision of labia tissue
  • General anaesthesia is administered.
  • Using either the wedge technique or the trim technique, excess labia tissue is removed.
  • Remaining labia is reshaped and resized to your desired proportions.

Deciding on whether the procedure is right for you depends on several factors.

Dr. Andrew Cheah will be pleased to advise you on the most suitable procedure for your needs based on my experience with many patients before you.

All surgical procedures have some degree of risk. The procedure should be carried in a safe environment and in an accredited clinic. Minor complications that do not affect the outcome could occur occasionally. Major complications are rare.
